A remote business setup in Europe should reduce travel and administrative friction, not move legal risk into your inbox. For a foreign founder, Hungary can provide an EU company structure without requiring an improvised local network - provided incorporation, banking, tax registration, and ongoing compliance are treated as connected legal work rather than separate purchases.
A Hungarian Kft can be a practical vehicle for consultants, online businesses, trading companies, software founders, and cross-border service providers. It is also a serious legal entity with filing duties, accounting obligations, and bank due diligence. The opportunity is real, but so is the cost of getting the structure wrong.

What remote company formation in Hungary actually means
Remote company formation in Hungary does not mean anonymous incorporation or automatic approval by every authority and bank. It means the process can be organized from abroad through properly prepared documents, remote communication, lawyer-led execution, and a defined local service structure.
For many founders, the legal documents can be prepared before travel is considered. Depending on the shareholder's country, identity documents, signature formalities, powers of attorney, and document legalization requirements, some original or certified paperwork may still be necessary. The right question is not, “Can I do everything online?” It is, “Which steps can be handled remotely, and what evidence will each institution require?”
That distinction matters most for the corporate bank account Hungary process. A company may be registered before the bank completes its own customer due diligence. Banks can request information on the beneficial owner, source of funds, expected activity, customers, suppliers, and the commercial purpose of the business. Remote incorporation and remote banking are different questions, with different identification rules. Neither bank approval nor authority approval can be promised.
Why Hungary is often the practical entry point
Hungary places a company inside the EU legal and commercial environment while offering a relatively direct company incorporation process. The usual private limited company is the Hungarian Kft, a familiar structure for international owners that limits shareholder liability subject to applicable law and the company’s actual conduct.
The statutory share capital for a Hungarian Kft is HUF 3,000,000. How and when that capital is made available should be discussed before filing, not treated as a box to check after registration. Your planned business activity, cash position, shareholder arrangements, and banking plan all affect the sensible approach.
A company setup in Hungary can also support commercial credibility with European customers, suppliers, payment providers, and professional counterparties. But it is not a substitute for substance. A registered office, a delivery agent, and a company number do not by themselves establish tax residence elsewhere, solve permanent-establishment exposure, or make a business eligible for every payment or banking service. Tax planning should begin with where management decisions are made, where people work, where customers are located, and what the company actually does.
A five-step route to a controlled remote setup
1. Define the business model before selecting activity codes
Start with the commercial facts: ownership, intended activities, invoicing flows, expected turnover, customer countries, suppliers, employees, and whether the founders expect to relocate. This is where many costly errors begin. A generic description of “online business” is rarely enough for banking, accounting, or immigration planning.
The structure must match the business. A software consultancy, an e-commerce importer, and a holding company can all use a Kft, but their VAT, customs, banking, and accounting needs are not the same.
2. Prepare shareholder and director documentation
To register a company in Hungary, the lawyer needs reliable identification information and a clear ownership and management structure. Foreign corporate shareholders, multiple beneficial owners, or documents issued outside Hungary can create extra formalities. Deal with those early.
The incorporation documents should also settle practical questions that founders often postpone: who signs for the company, how profits may be distributed, whether a director has sole authority, and how shareholder disagreements are handled. A fast filing is useful. A filing that leaves control unclear is not.
3. Establish the registered office and delivery-agent support
Every Hungarian company needs a registered office. For overseas owners, this is more than an address on a public record. Official correspondence must be received, monitored, and acted on within deadlines.
A delivery agent provides an additional local point of contact for statutory communications where required. This service is particularly relevant when directors or owners are outside Hungary and cannot manage Hungarian-language official mail personally. It does not replace active management of the company. It gives that management a dependable local channel.
4. File the incorporation and address VAT needs
Once the corporate documents are executed, the company registration filing can proceed. Company formation in Hungary commonly involves coordinated legal documents, registration, tax administration, and the setup of the registered-office arrangement.
EU VAT registration can be commercially useful for qualifying cross-border activity, but it must be aligned with the company’s actual transactions. Registration does not remove the need for correct invoices, VAT reporting, or evidence supporting the VAT treatment applied. A 27% Hungarian standard VAT rate is only one part of the analysis. Cross-border services, intra-EU goods, imports, and local sales can each follow different rules.
5. Move directly into banking and Hungarian accounting
After formation, founders need an operating plan, not a folder of registration documents. Bank onboarding should be supported with a clear explanation of the business and consistent evidence. Conflicting statements between the incorporation file, bank questionnaire, website, and expected transaction profile are avoidable red flags.
Hungarian accounting begins from the company’s first real activity. The accountant needs timely invoices, bank statements, contracts, payroll information where applicable, and visibility over foreign transactions. Late or incomplete records can turn a well-planned structure into an expensive compliance problem.
Budget for the company, not only the filing
The formation fee is only one decision point. Founders should budget for incorporation, statutory capital, banking-related requirements, registered-office renewal, delivery-agent renewal, accounting, tax filings, and any specialist advice required by their activity.
For a standard lawyer-led company setup in Hungary, the total setup fee through ARENDAS is €1,490 plus VAT. It includes preparation and filing of corporate and legal documents, company registration, EU VAT registration, the first year of registered-address and delivery-agent services, and assistance with opening the company’s business bank account.
From the second year, registered-address service is €250 per year and delivery-agent service is €300 per year. Ongoing Hungarian accounting normally ranges from €200 to €250 plus VAT per month, depending on the company’s activity and transaction volume. Authority fees, bank charges, certified translations, legalization, and other third-party costs may be additional where applicable.
Company ownership is not business residence
A Hungarian company can be part of a wider relocation plan, but company incorporation in Hungary does not grant a founder the right to live in Hungary. Property ownership does not automatically grant residence either.
Business residence requires a separate immigration assessment based on the applicant’s nationality, purpose of stay, funds, accommodation, insurance, business plan, and other evidence required in the individual case. Residence-permit legal services start from €2,490 plus VAT. The Investment Residence Permit via Investment package is €8,990 plus VAT and covers coordinated professional and legal support for company formation, property acquisition, and residence-permit processes. The investment or property purchase price, authority fees, and third-party costs are separate unless an engagement expressly states otherwise.
Before you start, have these answers ready
A faster remote business setup in Europe begins with accurate information. Before instructing counsel, be ready to explain four areas: the identity and ownership chain of every beneficial owner; the company’s expected activity and customer geography; the likely source and use of funds; and whether any owner or director intends to seek business residence in Hungary.
Also prepare identity documents, proof of address where requested, details of planned directors, and any existing contracts or business materials that explain the company’s commercial purpose. A credible file helps the legal, accounting, and banking work move in the same direction.
